The Politics Of Data Centers Makes It Impossible To Stop Them

Many of the largest data center development companies and their executives lean way left politically.

Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, Meta, Amazon, and Equinix all have PACs and/or executives that contribute significantly more to Democrats than Republicans.

A few of them even currently appear in the Democratic Large-Cap Core Fund, which Goods launched with various partners back in 2020 and only includes companies that contribute 75% or more to Democrats.

For data center proponents, being Democrat-leaning is the perfect political posture for these companies to be in.

The primary concern with data centers is their significant energy use and, in turn, their impact on the climate.

The political party that fights for climate regulation – the Democratic Party – is the same one that these tech companies have been bankrolling for years.

Put differently, if any political party were to want to ban or significantly regulate data centers, it would be the Democrats. Most Republicans are pro-business. It’s unlikely they’ll ever try to oppose or restrict data centers.

But to regulate data centers, Democrats will have to bite the hands that feeds them.

And if neither the Democrats nor the Republicans will regulate them, who will?

This is exactly why everyone should use the Goods Unite Us app to shop and invest according to their values.

It’s a perfect example of why fighting corporate money in politics isn’t just about reclaiming our democracy, it’s also about saving our planet 🌎 and whatever other issues matter to you.

Our politicians should not be forced to choose between their corporate donors and their own and their constituents’ values.

Until we get a new Supreme Court, corporations are going to be able to keep doing this.

The only way we can fight back is to hit them where it hurts: their pocketbooks.
